With the 10th anniversary of 9/11 approaching, the State Department issued a message to Americans abroad -- be on alert.

U.S. officials said the threat from Al Qaeda is still very real, and this anniversary is a coveted opportunity to strike again.

Experts say terrorist groups often plan attacks to coincide with significant dates on the calendar. That's why the state department has issued a rare "worldwide travel alert."

U.S. officials are confident of security measures in place at tome. Meanwhile, we have new numbers that show a keen global awareness of terrorism.

Since the 9/11 attacks, at least 35,000 people have been convicted as terrorists worldwide.

However, it also suggests that dozens of countries are using the fight against terrorism to curb dissent.
